Accessibility statement

01Our commitment

Many of the people who use this website live with chronic pain, fatigue, tremor, migraine, low vision or conditions that affect concentration. An awkward website is not a minor annoyance to them, it is a barrier to healthcare. We take that seriously.

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA across this website, and we design for that standard rather than retrofitting it.

02What we have done

• Semantic headings in a logical order on every page, so screen reader users can navigate by structure.
• Text and interface colour contrast tested to meet WCAG 2.1 AA, including on our darker sections.
• Visible focus indicators on every interactive element, so keyboard users can always see where they are.
• Full keyboard operability: the eligibility check, forms, accordions, menus and tabs can all be used without a mouse.
• Descriptive alternative text on meaningful images, and decorative images hidden from assistive technology.
• Form fields with real labels, clear error messages linked to the field they belong to, and errors announced rather than shown by colour alone.
• Respect for the reduced motion setting on your device: if you have asked your system to reduce motion, our animations do not play.
• Layouts that reflow down to 320px width and remain usable at 200% zoom, without loss of content or horizontal scrolling.
• Live regions used for status messages, such as search results and form confirmations.
• Plain English, short sentences and no jargon padding, which helps everyone and particularly helps people with cognitive fatigue.

03Known issues

We would rather list our shortcomings than claim perfection. The following are known and are being worked on.

• Embedded third party video players are not fully within our control, and their captions and controls may not meet the same standard as the rest of the site.
• PDF documents provided by third parties may not be fully tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we will provide the content in an accessible format.

04How we test

We test with keyboard only navigation, with screen readers, with browser zoom to 200% and at viewport widths down to 320px, and we check colour contrast against the WCAG 2.1 AA thresholds during design rather than after build.

An independent accessibility audit is planned. Its scope, date and findings will be published here: [independent audit details to be confirmed]. This statement will be updated when it is complete.

05How to report a problem

If something on this website is difficult or impossible for you to use, please tell us. Describe what you were trying to do, what happened, and what you are using, for example a screen reader, a browser or a phone. You do not need technical detail.

06What we will do

• Acknowledge your report within 3 working days.
